The Beginning

Post by Truthful Nomad on Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:25 pm

Late Spring

Fili winced and opened his eyes. He felt confused at what he saw. Was it... sunny? warm? and he was laying in... he glanced around to see the field of grass and wildflowers he was in. It was really beautiful and he felt tranquil. Maybe he was dead? Then he remembered. The battle... Azog had captured him and thrown him off a cliff. The orc had tried to stab him but managed to struggle enough but... did he die before he hit the ground?

Fili sat up and gazed around him. The lush green grasslands stretched as far as the eye could see in all directions. He thought he saw mountains in the distance... this did not look like Erebor.

Kili groaned. He hadn't even noticed it was him making the odd noises till slowly his senses were coming back. He felt tense, high strung and agitated but he didn't know why. "Ugh..uncle?" he finally said something akin to words. He remembered cold wind at his face, on the back of a goat. He loved goat riding. dwalin was there, Uncle Thorin, and his brother...Mahal! Kili forced himself upwards, eyes popping open as panic hit him again. " Fili!" He gasped out.
But wait, this was not raven hill. He was in some sort of valley. Were They in Beorn's farm again? Or Rivendell? None of it looked very familiar. Kili pushed himself onto his feet looking around in wide eyed confusion. " Fee? Fili?!" he yelled out.

Fili had just gotten slowly to his feet when he heard his brother's frantic voice. He ached all over, probably from his fall... but he wasn't seriously hurt. He limped forward and hurried towards that sound, "Kili!" He saw Kili pop into view when he stood up, the grass came up to their knees.

"Brother!" Fili rushed over and grabbed Kili into a tight hug, glad to see his brother was alive.

At that moment, they heard some muttering as Thorin stood up from nearby.

Kili slowly let go of his brother, overwhelmed with relief at having seen him alive and well. " when i saw Azog had you in his grasp... I thought..." his sentence was broken at the familiar deep voiced muttering. " U-uncle? is that you?" Kili called out. His smile went right back on his face as he ran towards his uncle, copying the same gesture as his brother. " Thank Mahal! We are all here!" he looked Thorin up and down for any signs of injury, relieved to se none too terrible.

Thorin grabbed up both his nephews in a tight hug, glad they were alright. He'd seen Fili fall and he knew Azog had been after Kili and to see them both alive and standing was a great relief.

Fili looked around once they had been properly reunited. "This isn't Erebor... and where is the rest of the company?"

Kili's smile faltered to a frown. He looked around too, nothing seemingly familiar. "I don't know. Dwalin was supposed to be with us too on Raven hill...I don't know where the company might be either. We should go search for them instead of standing here aye?" Kili said urgently. "Maybe we can find help some where in this valley?"

Thorin glanced down to make sure he still had the Ocrist sword then looked back at his nephews, "I think we must find out where we are first. Perhaps we will find the rest of the company at some point while we look. Come," He stepped out in front and started walking through the tall grass, certain his nephews would follow.

Fili followed Thorin's lead and kept his eyes out for any dangers. This tall grass could shelter any number of predators, so he made sure his swords were at the ready as well. As they walked for a few hours, he felt his stomach rumble. "Kili, is your bow with you? we may have to hunt at some point."

Thorin stopped suddenly, "I think I hear rushing water ahead," he said.

Kili looked over his back where his bow was strapped, and grinned at his quiver that was half empty. At least they had some arrows and he could always make more. " Aye. Let's get some hunting done." He strapped up his bow, notched an arrow and went on high alert to watch for any sings of game. Preferably a deer or a few rabbits. He followed, light footed, behind Thorin and Fili, eager to prove himself once again to his uncle.

As Kili walked on, he did keep glancing at the back of Thorin's head, wondering too just where his mind was. It seemed he had broken free of the dragon sickness. For now. Or at the very least, he was distracted. In his thoughts, he saw on the ground familiar tracks. " Game tracks of a fox, old, but it might still have a lead." He muttered softly.

Thorin could feel the tension in the air between his nephews. He felt guilty at what he had caused... was he all better? He didn't know. He wanted to be... but the Arkenstone and the treasure horde gnawed at his very being. He craved it. At the moment, he felt freed by the distraction of their current predicament. He glanced at Fili. "While Kili hunts, you try to find us some wood, I'm going to try to find the source of that rushing water... I'll be back for you."

Fili didn't like the idea of being separated, but he was still a little sore about Thorin's past actions. "Fine," he said simply, not meeting his uncle's eyes. Thorin watched him for a moment before turning and stalking away.

Fili glanced towards Kili and he could see his brother's figure moving about in the grass as he seemed to track something. He sighed as he started scanning the ground for anything he could use for a fire.

Kili inwardly frowned in worry. He never liked tension, it was so, awkward and uncomfortable. He wished this wasn't like this anymore. But was he ready to just forget about it right now? After Thorin wa so ready for people to fight a battle that he, that THEY had started and didn't even want to show up for it? Kili shook his head at it all, following the tracks. His leg was still a little sore but thanks to Tauriel, it was no longer a threat. Oh yes. Tauriel too. Thinking of her made him smile a little more. Finally kili traced the tracks to a crossroads of some sort in the animal life. Raeding the ground, he notched his arrow, ready to fire at the first thing that moved. Tredding as light as he could, he meandered through the forest until he found a wild ram. Kili grinned with glee. He hadn't had lamb chops in a long time! This surely must ease some of the tension!

Re: The Beginning

Fili mulled things over in his mind as he wandered around, collecting dried grasses and strayed pieces of wood he could gather. They were in some strange land, they were completely lost, who knows if they were even on Middle Earth anymore? And yet... their present situation wasn't the biggest thing on his mind. It was the past... it all played back in his mind. Kili's wound and sickness, how Thorin chose to leave him behind, and how they had to fend for themselves as Smaug ravaged Laketown, and how Thorin didn't even seem moved by their survival. How could he just forget that?

Fili angrily threw down a pile of wood in the grass and started to clear away a patch so they could build their fire. He knelt down in the ground to dig a pit and surround it with rocks. He dug with fervor, his emotions building. He was glad Thorin wasn't here at the moment because the more he thought, the angrier he felt.

Kili dragged the ram back to where they had all split off. He was sure Fili wouldn't need much help in the ways of picking up sticks, or Thorin in scouting, so Kili sat in the shade, occasionally glancing up from his work of prepping the meat. He idly wished he had better cooking skills like Bombur, but guess it didn't make much difference now, wishing. Kili dug a small circle where a potential fire could be. He felt sullen all of a sudden. And his face just morphed more and more into a scowl as he reviewed everything. Why did a war have to start? well, it was probably unavoidable thanks to the orcs anyway. And more importantly how did they end up here? What was happening in their absence? Were they missing out on the rest of the battle or was it over? anxiety built up in Kili. His cuts became more forceful and agitated. Were they in some sort of limbo between life and death now? Well it's not my fault. He told himself. If anyone, maybe it was his uncle's fault?...

Fili growled as he finally composed himself long enough to gather his things and make it back to the meetup point. He saw Kili already there with a ram. "Wow," he said, "that's a big one." He dropped his pile of kindling beside the fire pit Kili was digging and he pulled over a fallen log so he could sit down. "Need help skinning it?"

Kili looked up with a tried smile. " Aye. The faster we get it done the better." He said as he moved to one side. " Found it easily enough. maybe we might be able to smoke the rest of it in a hole over night, that way me might have some saved for later."
Kili sat in the comfortable silence for a bit with his brother, enjoying the companionship before he spoke again. " What do you make of all this Fee? What are we going to do? And...what about uncle? he whispered the last question.

Fili pulled out his knife and started in on the ram. He looked at Kili and sighed, "I don't know, Kili... the best I can think of is perhaps we were brought here due to some spell. Maybe Azog had a wizard working for him. I just wish I knew what 'here' was." He sighed at Kili's last question. "I... I don't know. He seems... better than before, but that doesn't mean anything. Maybe being here will cure him of it."

Kili nodded. Seemed as good as it was going to get for them right now anyway. Kili skewered the steaks of meat, hanging them over the fire to cook. He didn't have a shovel, but maybe if the ground wasn't too tough, he could just as easily dig a hole with his hands, feet, and a tough stick. It might take longer but it was something. " I hope so too." he said to Fili. "You got enough wood there to last us all the night through." he tried to smile. " Maybe after some food and good rest, we might be able to try again." Kili tried to be optimistic about it.

He bit into his share. the eat was coked but a little bland, having grown used to Bombur's amazing cooking skills. still, he's had worse though and refused to complain about getting a full belly. The archer found a decent spot to call a bed for the eve. If they were going to camp there that is.

Fili ate his share and stoked the fire a little as the sun began to set. As Kili was settling down in the grass, Fili gazed out across the vast sea of grass, watching fire flies dance around, small bird jumping about in the brush. At least this place was alive with the sound of life. The noise of crickets and owls and the creatures of the night was comforting, it almost reminded him of a more peaceful life back in the Blue Mountains, where they had grown up with little care.

It was at that point that Thorin returned. He saw Kili laying in the grass, Fili sitting on the log watching over his brother. Fili glanced up as his uncle approached. Thorin couldn't quite see Kili's face in the diminishing light of the sunset, "Is he asleep?" he asked, his voice hushed.

"Not yet," Fili said, looking as Thorin settled down and helped himself to some ram meat. "I found a river," he said, "its a few hours walk from here. I think we should follow it south in the morning and see where it leads. I saw no signs that anyone lives in this valley, except animals. We must consider the possibility that the land is deserted."

"What do we do then, Uncle?" Fili asked hesitantly.

Thorin paused, trying to think of an answer. He sighed and answered honestly, "I do not know, nephew..." in that instance, Fili was strangely comforted by his uncle's lack of confidence. He sounded more like the dwarf he knew before the journey, the dwarf he called uncle, and less like the dwarf who left them to die in Laketown and waged war against those who had welcomed him. Fili still had his doubts.

"Get some sleep, both of you," Thorin said, "I'll keep watch."

Kili nodded in solemn agreement. He turned over on his side, allowing his eyes to drift closed again. This place, had a sense of calm about it at night. Guess some things never change no matter the land. Kili was thankful for the simple things like that. He wished, not for the first time, that tomorrow would come a lot slower than it normally did. he wasn't looking forward to finding this place deserted, becuase then how did they have any hope of getting back home? Kili shook his head clear of those thoughts again and slumped down to sleep.

Fili lay down next to his brother and stared up at the stars. Even they were unfamiliar to him, not the stars he was used to at all. He felt small underneath the immense expanse of the night sky. He was truly exhausted by now, he really hadn't had any sleep since the battle began. Even that seemed so far away in memory now. He lay awake thinking, lost in his thoughts. He could see Thorin's dark silhouette moving about, guarding them, keeping them safe. Despite everything that still weighed in on his heart, Fili felt safe now with Thorin. And with that, he eventually slipped into an uneasy slumber.

The archer slowly woke up the next morning, took his sweet time of it too. Didn't really seem like it was a rush to do anything really right now. So he rolled over and snoozed for as long as he could.

Thorin had stayed awake all night watching over his nephews. He couldn't have fallen asleep anyway, there was too much on his mind. The next morning, as dawn broke, he was exhausted, but he knelt down to shake the brothers awake. "Come on," he said. "We'll head for the river and from there, we will make our way south."

Fili groaned as he woke up, laying in the grass, which was wet with morning dew. The air seemed more humid today, and the heat already bore down on them. Fili didn't realize that this part of the planet was entering its tropical summer season and the whole region, including the beach and forests, where slowly being transformed from a temperate, mild spring climate to a tropical humid climate where the sun would become their worst enemy.

Kili stretched till her heard a few cracks of his bones. Every morning felt like it was too early to be up for him most of the time. He heard Thorin's plans, always comforted that his uncle seemed to always know what to do, even if sometimes he didn't seem in the right mind, he at least didn't lack the common sense of survival. Kili got up, helping his brother to his feet, slung the extra meat over his shoulder and followed Thorin again. "What do you think will be in the south?"

Thorin led his nephews through the prairie and a number of hours later, they came to the rushing river. Fili looked at it and knelt by the banks to wash his face and hands and to take a few drinks. The water was crystal-clear.

Thorin looked at Kili, "well I'm not sure yet, nephew, but the south is the best way to go because north seems to lead to those mountains on the horizon and we cannot cross this river to go west. East may be acceptable, but we would lose the river.

Fili sighed, "south it is then."

Sounds as good a plan as any. Kili thought to himself as he followed suit. Not like there as much more to do. He also added sullenly. The water was a happy welcome to him too, he was parched and drank his fill till he knew he was going to be regretting it later, no doubt stopping every hour to relieve himself. Dwalin always said it was important to stay hydrated. " If we get too hot, we can bathe in the river." Kili added out loud.
